We hope you will join us for the food and the fun!! "Souper Bowl" Sunday Shrove Tuesday & Lent OK, so what is “Shrove Tuesday?” As some of you know, it is the end of one Church season (Epiphany) and signals the beginning of Lent. The Lenten season has traditionally been associated with fasting and/or denial. The religious focus during worship focuses on Jesus’ journey to the cross, his betrayal and the three days associated with his last supper, his crucifixion and ultimately his resurrection. But Shrove Tuesday has a slightly different focus, it is a mini feast recalling the cleaning out of cupboards, historically flour in particular, hence a focus on pancakes. Members of our Men’s Club would like to invite you to supper on February 16th at 6:00pm, in Charter Hall. Pancakes and sausage or ham will be served and there will be a brief devotional focused on the tradition and meaning of the Lenten Season. The meal is free, with all donations gratefully accepted. We have again accepted a warm invitation from the Paradise Lutherans to worship with them on Ash Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00pm (780 Luther Dr., off skyway next to the CVS drug store). Featuring a multi-sensory and invitational focus, the service invites one to enter the Lenten season of denial and a closer walk with Jesus, with depth and sincerity. We, in turn have invited members of Paradise Lutheran to worship with us on Good Friday at our traditional Tenebrae Service. We emphasize, enter into, experience Your birth and Your crucifixion. Your resurrection keeps an ever-flickering flame of hope alive in our hearts. We read Your words as remembered by Your disciples and Paul. We attempt to follow Your disciplines of simplicity, prayer and service. All of these are elemental and basic in the striving to live our faith. But there is something more—something which pervades the centuries, something which is more powerful than either Your birth, crucifixion or Your resurrection. It is Your CARING—how could such an intangible, simple, indescribable thing be so powerful as to carry through into our time? It is a force able to reach into our depths of hungering loneliness, it is a force permeating our pain and sorrow, it is a force healing our relationships. In gentleness is this force, yet it is as strong today as when You walked this earth—it survives through the worst that man can do to man, when nothing seems to matter any longer there is still Your caring—reaching out and touching us. And it is such a personal thing! Never is Your caring just a general act, but an intimately directed thrust of love for the individual. You care about us! me! and that is the difference You make in our (my) life!Lord, Emmaus in Paradise The
time to sign up to work a walk is now! We are trying to start a

UMCOR Emergency - February 7, 2010 Haiti Earthquake We have all been deeply saddened by the death and destruction caused by the earthquake in Haiti. Our hearts go out to the survivors, most of whom have lost loved ones and have been left homeless. We can help first of all by praying for these people, and then through an emergency offering for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR workers were already working on projects in Haiti, a very needy country, when the earthquake struck. Very sadly, the Executive Director of UMCOR, Rev. Sam Dixon, died before being rescued from the rubble, and Rev. Clinton Rabb, a leader in the U.M. Volunteers in Mission (VIM), died from his injuries shortly after being rescued. UMCOR has close ties with the Methodist Church in Haiti and is responding to the devastating earthquake, providing immediate relief to the people of Haiti. UMCOR will stay with them longer than other relief agencies do! One hundred percent of UMCOR appeals go to disaster relief in the area designated. Please give generously! |
